Soccer Peace Cup – Aston Villa Victorious Over Juventus
Despite entering as the underdog, Aston Villa was able to defeat Juventus 4-3 during the fourth Peace Cup. A poor performance in Aston Villa’s first game against Malaga seemed to promise victory for Juventus, which entered the finals after defeating Real Madrid 2-1. However, the Italian favorites stumbled, with a lack of definition on “La Vecchia Signora” handing victory over to their rivals. In the first half of the match, each team was able to match the action offered by the other. Neither demonstrated any particularly good plays, nor managed to score. Aware that this would be an opportunity for his team to shine, Martin O’Neill directed Aston Villa players to tighten their defense with Carlos Cuellar, a Spaniard who gave a magnificent performance blocking his Italian opponents. As a result, Aston Villa was able to block the Italians as they struggled to approach goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Juventus, however, was not allowing Aston Villa to approach either. As time passed, the English team grew more comfortable with its game; in particular, Norwegian striker John Carew began making his moves. With constant shooting, Carew was able to shake Gianluigi Buffon’s goal. Buffon, however, managed to defend his frame despite the onslaught. As the final minutes of the first half ticked onward, Aston Villa Midfielder Marc Albrighton managed a powerful shot straight towards Buffon’s goal. Buffon, however, similarly managed an incredible save, marking the close of the first half, and the score still intact. In the second half, Juve tried to turn the match by adding more intensity to is game; however, instead of the players putting pressure on their rivals, they began making too many hasty plays – a change that the British took advantage of. A more powerful team, Aston Villa was able to get closer to Juve’s goal. Nevertheless, despite the constant pressure exerted by one another, neither team was able to open the score. The second half ended again with a score of 0-0. In overtime, both Juve and Aston, showing great fatigue, solidly defended their goals. As a result, the match was determined through penalty kicks. Juventus missed twice, while Aston took the lead by missing only one shot, bringing the final score to 4-3 in favor of the Villa. The team celebrated on the field with the trophy in the players’ hands, the first victory in the tournament.

Final chance
The options are not quite as talented as at AC Milan, where Ruud Gullit, Jean-Pierre Papin, Dejan Savicevic and Zvonomir Boban competed for a single slot, or at Real Madrid, where his decisions often meant leaving out galacticos from his team — but one question is causing Fabio Capello to stroke his square chin.
