Cool as a Mercedes-benz Fan Clutch
About four thousand controlled explosions happen inside the engine every minute that it is running. The spark plug of the ignition system ignites the fuel mixture in each cylinder to propel the vehicle down the road. These chemical explosions produce enormous amounts of heat. As the engine continually increase in performance the temperature gets hotter and hotter. Excessive heat however is not favorable to engines. Heat, if not controlled, may cause the automobile to eventually break down and be damaged in matter of minutes. The cooling system on the other hand, controls these high temperature and functions primarily to help cool the engine down. Deep inside the car’s engine, fuel is constantly burning by the second. Obviously these burning emits high temperature that if not controlled, may cause the engine to malfunction. The cooling system works by sending a liquid coolant through passages in the engine block and heads. As the coolant flows through these passages, it picks up heat from the engine. The heated fluid makes it way to the front of the car passing through a rubber hose to the hot radiator. As it flows along thin tubes, the hot liquid is cooled by the air stream entering the engine compartment from the front grill. Once cooled, the liquid returns to the engine to absorb more heat. Basically, the engine heat is gradually circulated to different areas through the use of a heat-absorbing coolant. A particular device that proves to be an integral component of the automotive cooling system is the fan clutch. Thermostatically controlled, this device mainly function as an efficient temporary substitute for the engine’s mechanically-driven radiator cooling fan. This saves power since the engine does not have to fully drive the fan. As hot temperature continues to arise, the fan clutch becomes fully engaged drawing a higher volume of cool air through the car’s radiator which prevent it from overheating. They are generally located at the front of the water pump and driven by a belt and pulley connected to the engine’s crankshaft. Most automobile manufacturers engineer high-quality fan clutch that greatly supplement their engine system’s performance. A world-renowned German company places the fan clutch to a different class.
