Did Destroying Name-Brand cars just appear in Race games?

I’ve noticed for years that racing games had ALWAYS avoided allowing one to crash, destroy, damage LICENSED Name-Brand vehicles (such as BMW, Ferrari, Begatti), but relatively recently i have noticed racing games now adding this feature (e.g., Gran Turismo 5, Race Driver: Grid)…

Is this true, that these name-brand car licensed games just recently added the feature to damage them or has it always been around for many years (please provide the 1st game to do this, if so)?

From my view, it seems that when Burnout came out which is prolly the best known smash-up racing game around, despite it not having any licensed cars, maybe that is what made these other games deside to do the same but up the ante and allow crashing of name-brands?

Or maybe the name-brands were lest queezy about allowing their cars being damaged in games?

Well, first of all, you can’t destroy or damage any cars in Gran Turismo 5, at least not the current version. You can smack a wall as hard as you want, and the car will still be in perfect shape.

Burnout was one of the first games that added realistic damage, and before it, there weren’t really any engines that could do it. Actually burnout’s damage is not at all realistic, but it is elaborate and fun to look at, with parts disintegrating and flying everywhere. Since then with better consoles a lot of games have picked up on that smash and crash genre. Like Motor Storm and Grid. It just wasn’t possible for games to have good crashes. The best they could do was parts gradually falling off like in Smuggler’s Run.

I think the name brands were more concerned about getting sued when some kid jumped in their car and drove it around smashing into things, then blamed it on the game.

Most of them still don’t allow it. Motor Storm’s vehicles are all fictional. Grid is one of the few exceptions and I think that’s mainly because it tries to be an honest racing game, it’s not about the crashes.
