BMW 650i vs. Porsche 911 Carrera?
My dad wants to buy a new car and he told me German coupe. So I researched for him and these are my two favorite cars. What do you guys think? Why? And I gotta question stuck on my mind not really related to this, Is there a difference with like a 300 hp V6 and a 300 hp V8?
Two good answers here, but a clarification or two might help.
First, both cars are essentially a two-seater, and as such the design parameters did not include worrying about rear seat legroom. Consequently, the front seat tracks are long, and long-legged drivers will have no problem fitting in the driver’s seat of either. The legroom stats are within 0.4 inches.
Second. the sound of the Porsche is music to a Porschephile’s ears, so don’t assume the BMW’s V8 will sound better to you.
Lastly, it’s not only power-to-weight that counts. I hate that number.
For one thing it’s usually given as pounds per horsepower, which means the number is better if it’s smaller, which makes no sense.
Lastly, most of us are more concerned about how a vehicle feels coming off the line or when we just tromp on it. That feeling is more influenced by torque than horsepower.
The best measure of performance potential is the sum of Horsepower and Torque (in pound-feet) divided by the vehicle’s curb weight in tons [(h+t)/T). That gives a nice three-digit number that gets bigger as the horsepower and torque get bigger, which makes more sense.
The BMW has more horsepower (360) and torque (also 360) than the Porsche (345 and 288), but it weighs a freaking 700 lbs more, so the 911 wins the (h+t)/T by about 7.5%. And that’s if you buy the base Carrera. The “S” has 385 and 310 and only weighs 22 lbs more, for a 17.2% advantage.
